Finding Winnie: The true story of the world's most famous bear
Bibliography:
Mattick, Lindsay. Finding Winnie: The true story of the world's most famous bear. Boston, MA: Little Brown & Co, 2015. ISBN: 9780316324908
Plot Summary:
Harry, a smart and caring veterinarian bought a bear on his way to joining the army. He named the bear Winnipeg, Winnie for short. Winnie became the mascot of their Canadian Brigade. Harry took her with them to England. He decided it was best to leave Winnie at the London Zoo when he found out he was going to the war zone. Christopher Robbin was a boy that fell in love with Winnie. He played with her inside the enclosure. Christopher's father wrote stories about Christopher and his adventures with his stuffed bear named Winnie-the-Pooh which was named after his playmate Winnie. It turns out the mother reading this story about Winnie to her son is actually the author of the story and is related to Harry the Veterinarian. She named her son Cole after Harry Colebourn.
Critical Analysis:
I immediately fell in love with this story of Winnie. Any fan of Winnie-the-Pooh would fall in love with it, too. The mother telling the story to her son is the author and great, great granddaughter of Harry Colebourn. The story is connected to reality and fantasy at the same time. The pictures have incredible detail that makes the animals and people look realistic. We can see the facial expressions and see the bear climbing his post. The story began in Winnipeg, ended in London, began again in London and ended in Winnipeg. It made a complete circle. There was rhythm in reading the story and a little pattern. I think the pictures helped tell the story clearly.
